YOGA ANATOMY with LOUISE BLOOM
For teacher (who like to brush up their yoga anatomy knowledge) or yoga practitioner
Our bodies are complex systems developed over years of evolution. A good, contemporary understanding of the role of these systems, how they affect each other, and how we can use them is essential for effective and efficient movement, health and attitude.
This one-day session will provide an introduction to these systems, how they work together, and how they relate to the ancient principles that underpin yoga. This will include the structure of the bones, muscles, nerves and blood supply and how these affect our movement.
INTRODCUTION AND BODY AWARENESS
Why learn anatomy and physiology to teach yoga? This introduction will explain the benefits of knowing how to understand what is happening in our own and our student’s bodies, how to get the most from yoga and how to teach safely and support your students.
SKIN AND THE SENSES
The skin is the edge of our ‘self’. Learn how our body generates sensation such as touch and moves information toward the brain.
THE BRAIN AND NERVOUS SYSTEM
A summary of the spinal cord and the three levels of the brain – primal (diencephalon), limbic (emotional regulation and memory), and higher (cortical regions for processing and complex functions). Introduction to the somatic (motor) and autonomic (parasympathetic and sympathetic) nervous system.
EXCRETION, REPRODUCTION AND FOUNDATION
The body’s most basic functions – excretion, sexual organs and the perineum and stable foundation for movement.
HEART, BLOOD AND REPAIR
Introduction to the function of the heart and circulation including the action of immune cells and cell repair processes.
THE BREATH AND RESPIRATION
The lungs, oxygen and carbon dioxide, and how the body creates movement.
Digestion, Power and the Solar Plexus
Food consumption and nutrition, how cells burn or store energy, and the body’s cycles of ‘rest’ and ‘digest’.
Homeostasis and integration
Whole body regulation. How all the systems work together. Thyroid and hormonal systems. Responding to inner and outer environments (senses). Stress and the body.
Bones of the upper and lower limbs and body
Types of joints and range of movement
Ligaments, joint movements, and stretching
THE SKELETON MUSCLES
Major muscle groups of the upper and lower limbs and body
Tendons and overuse injury
Somatic (motor) control of movement
‘Reciprocal inhibition’, balance and control
Healthy nerve movements
Signs and symptoms of nerve problems and what to do

OVER LOUISE BLOOM
Louise has been using yoga since her childhood to stay healthy and manage pain. She has a passion for bringing traditional health knowledge and modern research into alignment. Qualified as both a Hatha yoga teacher (India) and a physiotherapist (NL and UK), Louise coaches and teaches around the world, using embodied approaches to help clients understand what is happening within their bodies and minds and how to use yoga to restore and maintain balance.
